In the news: Work begins on new Mohawk rec centre

Mohawk College breaks ground tomorrow on a new recreation centre for students.


The two-storey, 64,000 square foot facility located between the Student Centre and student residence at the Fennell Campus, will include three gymnasiums, an indoor running track, a fitness centre, multi-purpose studios and outdoor basketball and volleyball courts.


The $35 million centre is expected to open in the Fall of 2013. The Mohawk Recreation Centre is part of the ongoing Fennell Campus Renewal Project. The centre will replace fitness and recreation facilities that are among the oldest and smallest at Ontario's 24 colleges.


Mohawk Board Chair Ty Shattuck, Mohawk President Rob MacIsaac and Mohawk Students' Association (MSA) President Dan Clark will take part in the groundbreaking.


The MSA's support the Fennell Campus Renewal Project will be recognized during the groundbreaking with the dedication of the new MSA Plaza to be developed across from the rec centre.


In the Ontario govenrment's latest survey of college students, Mohawk ranked first in overall student satisfaction among Ontario's eight largest colleges and all colleges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Mohawk also ranked second overall among Ontario's 24 colleges for quality of facilities and services.
